Advanced Benefits Consulting (ABC) Benefits Tip: Wage Reporting

11/1/2021

One of the biggest causes of overpayment (and even underpayment) of benefits is because beneficiaries do not report their earnings.  It is critical for beneficiaries to report earnings so that Social Security, and other agencies that administer benefits, can make income determinations.  When returning to work, beneficiaries can use the following methods to report earnings to the Social Security Administration (SSA):

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Download and use the SSI wage reporting app from the Google Play or Apple store.  Make an effort to report earnings by the 6th day of each month.
  • Report over the phone by calling SSA toll free at 1-800-772-1213.
  • Fax or mail pay stubs to the local SSA field office.
Title II (SSDI, Child Disability Benefit, etc.)
  • Call SSA toll free at 1-800-772-1213 and ask the representative to add the employer to the beneficiary’s case.  Once added, earnings can be reported through the beneficiary’s ssa.gov account under “My Wage Report”.  Save reporting receipts for record-keeping.
  • Fax or mail pay stubs to the local SSA field office.
For both SSI and Title II, keep copies or download pay stub PDF’s for personal record-keeping.
